Totem II

The work is presented as a vertical sculpture made of textile materials in a uniform cream tone. Its structure is formed by several overlapping volumes that create a totemic composition of slender proportions. Composition and forms: The upper part culminates in an elongated, rounded element, wrapped in strips of fabric that crisscross and rise upwards. Just below is a sphere wrapped in textile bands that mark accentuated vertical sections. The next volume is more complex: a sphere covered by a network of protruding cords and knots, creating a dense and irregular relief. Below this, a smaller sphere serves as a transition to the base. The lower part is composed of a mass of wrinkled and compacted fabric, from which tubular forms emerge, opening up and resting on the ground, functioning as a support. This sculpture rises as a hybrid body, born of accumulation and metamorphosis. Its vertical form, composed of overlapping textile volumes, evokes the ancestral logic of totems: objects erected to mediate between the earth and invisible worlds. But here, monumentality depends not on the hardness of the material, but on its vulnerability. The artist chooses the softness of textiles—a material associated with touch, warmth, and care—to reimagine the notion of a monument. Each sphere is wrapped, held, or taut by strips and knots that reveal the gesture of manual creation: layers of time accumulated in a form that sustains itself thanks to its own persistence. The uniform white transforms the piece into an entity that seems to emerge from emptiness, accentuating the reading of its levels and textures: the upper part is more controlled and contained; the central section expands with dense and irregular reliefs; while the base opens like roots seeking to establish themselves in the ground. Totem exists on the boundary between symbol and organism. We can read it as a ritual object or as a creature in transformation; as a vestige of the past or as a glimpse of what we do not yet know. In its verticality, the sculpture invites the gaze to move from bottom to top, reminding us that bodies—all of them—seek to rise, to occupy space, to leave a mark. Here, the ritual is in the very fabric. And the monument, in the enduring delicacy.
